Given the uncertainty investors have experienced during the challenging economic landscape from 2007 to 2009, many appear to have behaved as is typical in such times, choosing the relative safety offered by term deposits (refer Figure 1) and foregoing the potential for higher returns offered by assets with more risk exposure.
We believe it is important that investors consider the potential 'costs' associated with term deposit strategies, particularly real return outcomes at the end of the term.
